TERMINAL EXERCISE 

Q1. Define the terms pollution and pollutant. 

Ans: The term ‘pollution’ is derived from the Latin word ‘Polluere’, which means ‘to contaminate any feature of the environment’.

        Pollution is the addition of any substance to the environment in excess            to what is normally present, thereby, making the environment impure.

        The substances which cause pollution are known as pollutants.

 

Q2. What are the sources of air pollution?

Q3. How can you control soil pollution? 

Ans:

The following measures should be taken to prevention of soil pollution-
i. Use of pesticides should be minimized.
ii. Use of fertilizers should be judicious.
iii. Cropping techniques should be improved to prevent growth of weeds.
iv. Special pits should be selected for dumping wastes.
v. Controlled grazing and forest management.
vi. Wind breaks and wind shield in areas exposed to wind erosion.
vii. Planning of soil binding grasses along banks and slopes prone to rapid erosion.

 Q4. What are the effects of noise pollution? 

 Ans: 

  • Noise leads to emotional and behavioral stress. A person may feel            disturbed in the presence of loud noise such as produced by heating of  drums. 
  • Noise may permanently damage hearing. A sudden loud noise can cause severe damage to the eardrum. 
  • Noise increases the chances of occurrence of diseases such as              headache, blood pressure, heart failure, etc.
  •  
  • Noise leads to increased heart beat, constriction of blood vessels and dilation of pupil.
  • Noise is a problem especially for patients who need rest.
  • Noise may cause damage to liver, brain and heart. 

Q5. Mention two pollutants which pollute both soil and water.

        Ans: Chemical waste from Factories and Industries.
               Acid rain can pollute both of them.
              Garbage can pollute both of them.

 

Q6. How can you reduce pollution caused by smoke in your neighbourhood?

         Ans:  

  • Plant more and more Trees it reduces pollution
  • Using public transports.
  • Turn off the lights when not in use.
  • Recycle and Reuse.
  • No to plastic bags. 
  • Reduction of forest fires and smoking. 
  • Use of fans instead of Air Conditioner. 
  • Use filters for chimneys. 
  • Avoid usage of crackers.

       Q7. Why should we not defecate, urinate and spit on soil?
      Ans: We should not defecate, urinate and spit on soil because it can be          damaged and get eroded losing nutrients and will not be able to gain                nutrients so that we can't do farming on it.
